Three presentations on documentary projects in the making:

  • It’s All Mine - James Muir (dir.)
  • Eat some Icecream, Do some Bombs -  Michael McLachlan (prod.)
  • Deadly Ponies Gang  -  Zoe McIntosh (dir.)

DOC2DOC is an event where documentary filmmakers get together and show works in various states of progress. The event is aimed at supporting a healthy documentary community. We encourage filmmakers and anyone interested in documentary to attend and take part in the discussion. Each presentation takes approx 15 mins in its entirety and the filmmaker will ask questions for which they require feedback from you…the audience!

When: 6.30pm, Tuesday 28th August 2012

There is paid-parking underneath the Owen Glenn Business School Building until 11pm

This DOC2DOC will be moderated by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Briar March (dir. There Once was an Island: Te Henua E Noho).

The presentations will be followed by a glass of wine (with koha appreciated) where you can discuss the projects presented by the filmmakers.

Men Like Us Premiere August 15

I’m almost certain that 2012 is a record year for theatrical releases of New Zealand documentaries. Following on from 10 documentary features screen in the NZ International Film Festival, now August also brings the premiere of Men Like Us, a feature documentary that looks at gay life in New Zealand, directed by Christopher Banks and supported by the Mental Health Foundation.

A revealing documentary window into the lives of nine New Zealand gay men aged 24 through 78, ‘Men Like Us’ highlights the common threads in our continuing struggle for everyday happiness in a straight man’s world.

DOC2DOC Call for Submissions

SDGNZ is currently seeking submissions for DOC2DOC in August. This is an opportunity to present works in progress, and to get valuable feedback from industry peers to help you move your project forward.

DOC2DOC will be held at 6.30pm on the 28th August 2012(venue TBC).

This event will be chaired by Briar March (director of There Once Was An Island: Te Henua e Nnoho), who has just returned from the US where Briar gained an MFA in Documentary Film and Video from Stanford University.

Selected filmmakers will need to present a five minute clip of your project. This can include selected rushes, research images, production stills, or a trailer for example.

If you are interested in taking part you will need to submit your expression of interest by 5pm, 17th August 2012. The four selected projects will be advised by the Monday 20th August 2012.

The Golden Hour screening Sunday TV One, 8.30pm

The Golden Hour, a docudrama about Murray Halberg & Peter Snell’s gold medal wins at the 1960 Olympics in Rome screens this Sunday 22 July on TV One in the Sunday Theatre slot.

The Golden Hour, directed by Justin Pemberton and written and produced by Steven O’Meagher, is an historical docudramas funded by NZ On Air’s Platinum Fund.

Inside New Zealand returns with Brother Number one tonight

The Inside New Zealand documentary slot returns tonight with the TV premiere of Brother Number One on TV3 at 9.30pm (Thursday 19 July). This is the broadcast version of the film, so at 44 minutes it’s significantly cut-down, but still well worth watching if you haven’t seen it.

It’s great to see the return of Inside New Zealand, but the TV3 website doesn’t seem to give any information about forthcoming documentaries in this slot. If anyone out there knows if we can expect to see regular Inside New Zealand documentaries again soon, please let me know.

Have your say on NZ documentary funding

NZ On Air released a discussion paper on NZ documentary funding at the end of June and is seeking feedback on the paper by 24 August.

This is an excellent opportunity to have a say on future directions for documentary funding in New Zealand and to address some of the weaknesses of current funding policy.

I won’t go into my views on the subject of funding in any detail in this post as I’ve covered this pretty extensively in a recent journal article, which can be read here.

However, I might write some more about the discussion paper itself soon. I’ve just come back from three weeks in Australia where I attended the CCI Winter School at QUT, Brisbane and gave a paper at the ANZCA conference in Adelaide  and spent the past weekend mentoring at Doc Lab (more on that soon too), so I’m playing catch-up at the moment.

Sumner Burstyn announces Cloud South Films will no longer make documentaries in NZ

ScreenHub have published a story about Cloud South Films’ decision to cease making documentary films in New Zealand because it’s simply to hard to make a living. An abridged version of the story published by WIFT quotes Sumner as saying:

“Docos in NZ get made mainly on borrowing, goodwill and freebees. They also run on the blood of interns. We eat up interns and spit them out. All those bright young things full of great ideas coming out of film schools. They pay for their educations and then we expect them to work for free. And then they are gone – into TV and features films because they need to earn a living. We’ve lost their voices for good. And these are the voices of the next generation.”

This lively panel discussion was focused on how to address the gap in documentary funding and development which is affecting the future of documentary production in New Zealand. (I tweeted this session live as Transmedia NZ).
